Pender Island is really two islands, North and South Pender, joined by a short bridge over a narrow canal. Most residents live on North Pender, where homes are spread across Magic Lake Estates, Port Washington, Hope Bay, Otter Bay and the shores around Browning Harbour. South Pender is quieter, with forested properties and homes near Bedwell Harbour and Gowlland Point. Magic Lake Estates and older island homes
Magic Lake Estates on North Pender is the island's largest residential area, and many of its homes are several decades old. Kitchens and laundry areas there were not always designed for today's larger, deeper appliances. Tight alcoves can restrict refrigerator airflow and crowd dryer vents, leading to poor cooling and long drying times, so we check clearances and venting as part of every diagnosis.
Cisterns, wells and saltwater intrusion
Fresh water is precious on Pender. Some neighbourhoods are served by small community water systems, and many homes rely on wells, rainwater collection or cisterns. Low or variable pressure can cause fill errors in washers and dishwashers, and coastal wells can be affected by saltwater intrusion, which is hard on valves, pumps and heating elements. A leaking appliance can also drain stored water quickly, so leaks are worth dealing with promptly.
Windstorms, outages and backup power
Pender is exposed to winter windstorms, and power outages are a regular part of island life. Many homes run generators or rely on propane for cooking and heat. Is Pender Island the same as Pender Harbour?
No. Pender Island is in the Southern Gulf Islands, reached by ferry to Otter Bay. Pender Harbour is on the Sunshine Coast mainland north of Sechelt. They are served on separate trips and each has its own page.
My washer shows a fill error and we are on a cistern. What should I do?
Check that the water taps are fully open and the cistern has water, then book a diagnosis with photos of the error code. Low pressure, clogged inlet screens and failing valves are common causes, and we will tell you which applies.
How far ahead should I book for Pender Island?
